History of Mold-Rite Plastics
Mold-Rite Plastics was incorporated in 1976 by Geoffrey Titherington; we started with five used injection molding machines and six full time employees, in a 7,200 square foot building. We moved in 1979 to a 22,500 square foot building with twelve used injection molding machines and twenty employees.
With the addition of Al Piafsky in 1981, we went from a custom molder (custom owned molds) to a proprietary molder (MRP owned molds). Around this time we instituted a policy of selling exclusively to distributors while concentrating on plastic packaging (caps).
In the early 1980's due to the government coming out with new regulations requiring all products to be tamper-evident the market was boosted for lined caps. Prior to this we sold about 90% of our caps unlined. We were running 1 and 2 up lining machines that could produce about 200,000 - 300,000 caps per day.
In the mid 1980's we added jars to our line of closures, purchased land and a 10,000 square foot warehouse in the Northgate Industrial Park.
In the late 1980's we added a manufacturing and office area to the warehouse totaling 32,000 square feet and 100 employees.
In the early 1990's we added more styles and sizes of both caps and jars. We also added more manufacturing and warehouse space to total 75,000 square feet, with 125 employees and moved all operations from Sharon Avenue to Plant Street.
We achieved three NACD Manufacturer of the Year awards (1991, 1993 and 1995), a very prestigious award in our industry.
In the mid 1990's we added Child Resistant Caps (CRC's) to our product line and expanded once again to 150,000 square feet and 160 employees. By this time we had purchased several larger lining machines that could each produce over a million caps each per day.
Late 1990's- Early 2000 we had grown to 250 employees, 65 injection molding machines, with over a dozen robots, 30 lining machines, a very modern tool-room and 270,000 square feet of space. With the addition of the robots we were able to pack the product directly from the molding machine in a single process. This helped to keep our pricing marketable, while allowing our machine operators more time to monitor the quality of the product. Now 90% of the caps we sell come with liners. As the demand for lined caps continues to be strong we have installed several Vision Systems on most of the lining machines to assist in the quality control process.
Today, Mold-Rite is estimated to be one of the top 30 companies of any size that manufactures rigid plastic caps. As we continue to grow in our 400,000 square foot facility, we have over 350 employees, 100 injection molding machines, 35 lining machines and 17 decorating machines. Since we design and build our own molds, we have the ability to offer complete design, engineering and printing services for our customers' total and component packaging needs.
